There were smiles all around and an atmosphere of pride and accomplishment as the united peoples of West Papua formally submitted their application for membership to the Melanesian Spearhead Group. In his speech, one independence leader said, "Indonesia can say what it likes. But WE ARE MELANESIAN."
Here, the President of the Malvatumauri, Vanuatu's national council of chiefs, leads a procession of West Papuan leaders to the MSG headquarters.
