Vanuatu Cannot Truly Be Free Until All of Melanesia is Free

The ceremonial gifts were not handed directly to the Melanesian Spearhead Group's Director General. Instead, they were passed to Ham Lini, Deputy Prime Minister of Vanuatu, who handed them on to the MSG. The gift-giving was done this way in recognition of Vanuatu's stalwart support for West Papuan freedom since its own independence in 1980.
To resounding applause, Mr Lini reminded those in attendance of the words of his older brother, Fr Walter Hadye Lini: 'Vanuatu cannot truly be free until all of Melanesia is free.'
